Screwdriver
Fiddling with food photos on a slightly better digital camera that I've borrowed. Mine is a measly 2 megapixels with no manual mode. I'm waffling between getting a 10-megapixel PowerShot with some nice bells and whistles, or a Digital Rebel SLR, which is less portable but takes lovely pictures. It's also a few hundred dollars more expensive. Damn my measly paycheck.

I love these sunlit drink shots, like the Screwdriver is gazing out the window longingly, dreaming of a better place. "Oh, if I could only be sipped out on a patio somewhere."

Sorry for replying to an old post; I'm just catching up on my reading...
Until a few weeks ago, I used a Canon PowerShot A710-IS for all the shots on our blog. Nearly everything you've seen there was shot with a point-and-shoot set to manual, in ambient light.
Do I love my new fancy dSLR? Yes. But I'm also not kidding myself that it's worth the extra money I spent on it considering that it's just a hobby. I still use the A710 for wide-angle shots, and around-town pictures.
If budget is an issue even the teeniest bit, go for a good P+S and learn to make it sing. :D

OK, sorry -- two more bits:
- On the PowerShot, macro mode is your friend
- Check out http://stilllifewith.com/ for some great food photography lessons

Thanks for the tips, Anita. I've been drooling over the photos on your blog for a while now, and the PowerShot ones are indeed impressive.
